an ep of golden bug on lddlm has been a long-time coming. paths crosses, encounters, similitudes. but it took all of us time to agree on how golden bug should fit into our mortal ethics of fragmentation: we don t want to sound like anybody else, each track on the ep should all sound different. the french but barcelona based producer played our game, anticipating his future and very diverse album with a spook yet catchy 12inch. wild boys was an instant ear-catcher, some proto funk with a very strong vocal by yan wagner that made it sound like duran duran on speedball. it was hard to take it to another level but lord tusk, one of our favourite producers of the emerging -no genre london scene beefs it up, kraftwerk way. its moody as we all are. ik voel je shows the more experimental spaced out side of golden bug, we d call it space rock if we had to. do not neglect l-horloge, it s slow, dark, menacing but it s a real time bomb if tuned correctly.

american label beyond the speaker made an impression with their first release angels against dust two years ago, a tasty 12inch split between legowelt & willie burns. for the latest outing, canadian mastermind michael silver aka cfcf (rvng, ghostly, 1080p) celebrates the soul and grooves of house, electro, and techno. three tracks that balance dancefloor hustle, intricate detail and flourishing melodies. lead track head up is a poignant call to the dancefloor, a peak hour house cut with an emergent vocal sample that rallies all for a blissful groove excursion. the b-side is a moodier affair, with mossy wall submerging the listener with potent rhythms as ominous bass intersects with a waking metropolis of melody. and the classic techno sound of sea of love deftly lulls us with gentle vocals and a looping guitar phrase.

it’s now pretty obvious that disco influence has not only been powerful in western clubs. it has also influenced musicians all around the world, and west-indies islands are no exception to the rule. indeed, at that time in the caribbean territories, local musicians and producers seized the sound of their us counterparts, and make it their own, melting-up disco, funk, and boogie (even early rap) elements with some more traditional or local styles. apart from some obvious titles which made it to the charts, very few was known on these productions until recently. from an initial pre-selection of 40 tracks, favorite recordings and waxist teamed up to narrow down the actual tracklist. with no pretention to be exhaustive, this selection represents a tiny sample of a broader ocean of quality caribbean disco/boogie tunes. favorite recordings & waxist are very happy and proud to bring back lights on some of these rare tunes.

sing like a bird (reprise) is a fresh version of the track originally released last year on peter van hoesen s time to express label, to which shuttle fans will have become familiar with in recent sets. it maintains the original s hazy reverbed flavour, but in the form of a more groove-oriented and psychedelic edit that sidelines much of the original s vocal track in favour of a snake enchanter-like synewave melody, for a less lyrical but equally musical new take. the b-side back here is an older track that shuttle has been holding back for a while, waiting for the right moment to reveal this atmospheric, melancholic and melodic track, in which intricately delayed layers of piano keys progressively unfold through a rich percussive background made of 808 rims, deep bass kicks, heavy toms and jazzy hats and rides.
